This is an impressive vintage berber rug BENI MAGHIL also written BENI Mguild on 185×310 cm, and it really carries a strong story.

The rug is woven in a detailed diamond pattern, where the repeating geometric shapes create an almost hypnotic rhythm. The colors are beautifully faded with shades of gray, blue, beige and a hint of rusty red in the middle – the patina gives the rug a vibrant character that only decades of use can create.

  • The Beni Mguild tribe belongs to Middle Atlas Mountains, especially around cities Azrou and Boujad in the Khenifra region.

  • The area is mountainous and cold, which has influenced the style of the blankets – they were made to retain heat in harsh winters.

It is a classic example of how Berber women combine art and functionality: the patterns are rooted in symbolism of protection, life and balance, while appearing elegant and modern today. With its size, the rug is ideal for a large living room or dining room, where it can function as a striking centerpiece.

ASRIEM means hope in Berber.

Beni Mguild carpet maintenance

Vacuum the Berber carpet regularly and take it outside and shake it once in a while. Stains are removed by soaking up the stain as quickly as possible with a cloth and then dabbing the stain with a damp cloth. The carpet is 100 % pure wool and is naturally covered with lanolin on each fiber, which means that stains do not penetrate into the carpet. Should we be lucky enough to get snow one winter in Denmark, then finally lay out the blanket in the white snow. This will thoroughly clean the carpet – completely naturally.

The story behind Beni Mguild rugs

🐑 Origin and area

  • The Beni Mguild tribe belongs to Middle Atlas Mountains, especially around cities Azrou and Boujad in the Khenifra region.

  • The area is mountainous and cold, which has influenced the style of the blankets – they were made to retain heat in harsh winters.

🎨 Characteristics of Beni Mguild carpets

  • Colors: Often deep and dark shades – especially indigo blue, red, brown, purple and burgundyThe dark blue (indigo) is almost a signature feature for Beni Mguild.

  • Patterns: Classic diamond patterns in repetitions, but denser and more “full” than, for example, Beni Ourain.

  • Texture: Thick, strong and heavy wool blankets – perfect for the cold of the mountains.

  • Patina: Many vintage Beni Mguild have a beautiful faded surface, where the colors have worn softer over time.

🌙 Symbolism

As with other Berber tribes, the patterns are not random:

  • Diamonds and crosses symbolizes protection, fertility and femininity.

  • Repetitive shapes can be seen as a narrative about the journey of life, the cycle of nature, and the spiritual beliefs of the tribes.
