Maintenance of Boujaad carpets
Maintenance of Asilal carpets
Although Asilal rugs are robust, their vibrant colors and fine weaving are best preserved with a little extra care:
-
Vacuuming
-
Vacuum regularly, but use low suction and preferably without a rotating brush.
-
Vacuum both sides a few times a year to remove dust that is deep in the weave.
-
-
Venting
-
Air the carpet out a few times a year, preferably in dry, light sunshine – but avoid strong midday sun as the colors may fade.
-
-
Stain removal
-
Remove stains immediately. Dab gently with a damp cloth and use mild wool soap if necessary. Avoid rubbing hard.
-
-
Professional washing
-
Have the rug professionally cleaned every 3-5 years at a dry cleaner that has experience with handmade wool rugs.
-
-
Rotation
-
Turn the carpet a few times a year so that wear and sun fading are distributed evenly.

The story behind Boujaad carpets
The story behind Asilal
Azilal rugs are woven in the villages around Azilal in the High Atlas, where Amazigh women have been creating rugs for their own homes for generations. Unlike many other Moroccan rug types, Azilal rugs rarely follow set patterns. Instead, they function as personal narratives, where symbols, colors, and shapes reflect the weaver’s life, the nature around her, and ancient traditions.
Each rug is therefore completely unique – a handmade work of art, where no two are alike.
