How to choose the right carpet for your home

Carpets create coziness, are good for the acoustics, warm the feet and can help create a frame in a room, but how do you choose just the right carpet for your home? Finding a rug for your home can be as difficult an exercise as choosing art for the walls. The right rug can really elevate a room and give it just the right look you want, while the wrong rug can seem like a block in the room that can't quite find its place.

Here are a few tips on what questions to ask yourself before going carpet hunting:

  1. What purpose should the carpet have? Should it be functional, i.e. either provide heat, provide better acoustics or delimit a room? Or is it a rug to tie your decor together and spread coziness?
  2. Where in the home do you need a carpet and are there several places where you could use a carpet and thus create coherence in your interior design?
  3. How big should your rug be?
  4. Do you have preferences for which materials should be used?
  5. Should the carpet be with long or short pile?
  6. Should the carpet be muted in color or should the colors be full of garbage?

Once you have clarified the above questions, your carpet hunt can begin!

Most often, we are inclined to jump into IKEA, ILVA or some other carpet country, where the selection is large and the measurements are standard measurements. But I would like to challenge you a little in that way of thinking. When we talk about art, whether it is wall art or carpet art, there is not much charm in choosing factory-made and mass-produced items. It's not art. When you choose unique works, it shows a certain standard in your interior design. It shows that you embrace art, that you have taken a stand, and have respect for the artistic process and the person behind the art. It will not just be a carpet, but a work of art, where only this carpet can be found in the whole world. It takes its place in your interior design and becomes incredibly personal and can create the coziness that you are looking for in your interior design. Your home is your oasis and your furnishings must reflect who you are, and precisely through personal choices and uniqueness, you can create a home where you feel at home and which makes you relax.

The carpets at Tibladin are all hand-woven by Berbers. It is an incredibly beautiful craft and each rug takes months to weave. The expression in each and every rug is different and contains a story that the Berber tribe expresses through art. There are no standard goals and therefore you will also find that many of the goals are a little fun in it. It may not be called 150×200 cm but 154×217, and this is where the flexibility comes in. It's charming that not everything is quite perfect. With a hand-woven carpet, there will be small blemishes - in fact, the tradition is that there must be at least one blemish in the carpet, as the Berber women otherwise believe that it brings bad luck.

What size should my rug be?

When you need to take measurements for your carpet, there are several ways to do it. If we take, for example, the rug for the sofa corner, you can either choose 1. a rug that fits into the notch in your corner sofa or 2. that goes approx. from edge to edge of your sofa or 3rd, you can choose to let the carpet go under the sofa. Letting the carpet go under the sofa can be practical, as it often lies a little more firmly, but it can also be nice to have a small border all the way around the carpet, which borders the sofa. If you choose to let your carpet go under the sofa, it looks best if a good part of the carpet goes under and not just a few cm. You can also choose to place your sofa far into the carpet, so that there is carpet all the way around the sofa. This way is good if you want to frame the sofa area.

If your rug is to lie under the dining table, you should preferably choose a rug where the chairs are inside the rug when they are placed next to the table. When you sit on the chair and it is pushed out, it is ok that the rear legs do not hit the carpet. At each end of the dining table, it is nice if there is a little extra carpet in relation to the length of the table. However, it does not have to be more than 20-30 cm. If you have a lot of space in the room, you can choose a large rug where the rug extends well over the table and where the chair legs are inside the rug even when they are pulled out. This solution often requires a lot of space.

If your carpet is to be in the bedroom, it is beautiful if the carpet lies at the foot of the bed and goes from edge to edge or in the middle of the room. If the carpet is to be under the bed, it is best if it reaches a good distance from each side of the bed, so that you step on something soft.

A long runner can be used either to divide rooms or in a long corridor. In the long hallway, the carpet does not need to fill the entire length of the hallway and leave at least 15 cm at each end so that it does not hit the door step and also leave some space on the sides so that it does not border right up to the wall. In this way, the hallway will appear larger and give a better sense of space.

What purpose should your carpet have?

Should your carpet improve the acoustics in a room, provide warmth for the feet and create a cozy atmosphere, then one will Beni Ouarain carpet be an obvious choice. A Beni Ouarain rug is made of 100 % quality wool in natural colours. The carpets are traditionally used by the Berber tribes as a warm surface where they sleep in the Bedouin tent. Traditionally, the carpet is bright with black diamond-shaped markings. At Tibladin we have both the completely traditional Beni Ouarain rugs in several sizes and Beni Ouarain rugs in different colors. Here, there is a good chance that you will find just the pile rug that fits your decor. This type of carpet is really good at warming the feet and at the same time is really good at improving the acoustics in a room. It is the perfect rug if you want a warm and cozy atmosphere. The carpets can be used in most places in the house. They are fantastic in a sofa corner, where you will suddenly find yourself wanting to sit on the floor. With a Beni Ouarain rug, you suddenly create an extra space in your sofa corner. The rugs are also used under the dining table and in the bedroom - either at the end of the bed, in front of your wardrobe wall or on either side of the bed. There's nothing better than stepping out onto a soft, warm rug when you wake up.

Also try placing a soft Beni Ouarain rug in the children's room, and see how your child will use the floor as a playground without getting a cold bum. It is cozy and warm and also takes away some of the noise from the play.

boucherouite carpet

If you want a carpet that can create a WOW effect and give a splash of color in the room, then Boucherouite carpets are a very obvious choice. A Boucherouite rug is a type of rag rug. All kinds of leftover textiles are used here, they can be pieces of fabric, clothes, cushions, etc. that no longer have a life in their current form, which are torn into small pieces and hand-knotted into a blanket and completely personal work of art. The Boucherouite rugs were originally used by the Berber tribes to cover the finer seating furniture and to provide a softer surface for camel backs. To day have Boucherouite rugs have found their way to the trendiest interior design enthusiasts and you will see them used in many home magazines. A Boucherouite rug can really give your interior character and fits incredibly well with the Scandinavian style, which is often colorless and streamlined, where a Boucherouite rug gives you a splash of color in your interior and can tie it all together. I usually advise my clients to be open-minded when looking at Boucherouite rugs and choose based on what you like and not so much what just fits the decor. A Boucherouite rug chooses its own place in the home and perhaps you have bought a rug that was intended for a certain room, but then it turns out that it fits better in a completely different place. So a Boucherouite rug is art, and you don't choose art from the outside, what fits your sofa. You can easily tie your decor together by finding decorations, cushions, throws, lamps, etc., that have one of the color tones that you have in the carpet. That way it won't look messy. You can use a Boucheruote rug both on the floor and you can also hang it on the wall. Tapestry has come to the fore in interior design again and breaks with the traditional form of wall decoration. It gives colour, character and is fantastic for improving acoustics.

Do you love vintage? Then you have to choose a beautiful old one Berber carpet. Here you get beautiful works of art, old carpets with lots of history. It's a refined choice that really gives your decor a boost. They can be used both as floor carpets and as wall carpets and provide a good mix of what Boucherouite and Beni Ouarain can do. They give you both color and warmth. A beautiful choice for your decor.
