How to clean your wool carpet in the snow

clean your carpets in the snow

When the snow hits Denmark, I get busy. It tingles all over the body to get all kinds of  woolen carpets,  Berber carpets and Beni Ouarain rugs at home out to clear the snow... Yes, you read that right! You can clean your woolen rugs in the snow. In fact, this is the most effective way to deep clean dust, dirt and stains while preserving the natural lanolin that lies on the fibers of the wool and which helps to prevent stains from penetrating your carpet.

It's not just something we come up with here at Tibladin, it's actually an age-old housewife's advice - and it works!

"Well, my carpet won't be ruined?" - No, not at all, on the contrary, the pile will rise again and your carpet will look like new. And the process really doesn't take long! If you have very large woolen blankets, it can be an advantage to have two for it, as it is heavy on the arms :-)

You can clean all kinds of wool blankets, wool poufs, wool plaids and wool sweaters in the snow - as long as you follow this simple guide.

But beware, you can get a little addicted to seeing how effectively it actually removes dust and dirt! A delicious winter cleaning in the snow!

Step by step carpet cleaning in the snow

  • Start by checking the snow. The snow must be firm and not like slush. The best is frozen snow, but slightly heavier snow also works well. You don't need a thick layer of snow, just that one surface of the carpet can be in contact with snow. Choose a good spot that is untouched and reasonably clean. A terrace made of wood or tiles or a piece of lawn.
  • Lay your blanket face down for approx. 15 minutes It doesn't matter if it stays there longer, if the snow is frozen snow. With a heavier strain, 15-30 min will be enough.
  • Turn your blanket over with the back facing down and lay it down. If you have an old stain on your carpet, you can take a snowball and massage it into the stain.
  • Shake your blanket and bring it inside.
  • Spread the carpet out in your living room and let it dry on the floor. The carpet dries in 30 minutes if you have general underfloor heating and a little longer if you do not have underfloor heating.
  • When you just get the blanket in, it may look a bit shabby, but just wait! Only when the carpet is completely dry will you be able to see how the color has become cleaner and that the pile will stand up and your carpet will appear like new.
