interior design inspiration, this is how you create a Moroccan Riad atmosphere in your bedroom

My own Riad

From boring bedroom to cozy Riad

Here in the corona era, I have such an uncontrollable desire to throw myself into projects that require something completely different from me than various tasks with homeschooling, building my website and coordinating our "new" everyday life. Projects where you can escape for a bit from news about the number of infected people and facts about how badly the surrounding countries are affected by this terrible virus.

When I travel around Morocco, I often stay in a riad (a traditional Moroccan building - a mix between hotel and Bed & Breakfast). I have always wanted to create the atmosphere of such a place in my own bedroom. I have an idea that it should be some warm earth colors, like the ones I see in Marrakesh. Before, my wall was just white and cold, and there wasn't much coziness.

I went down to Malgodt in Frederiks Allé in Aarhus, as I had chosen some delicious colors from Ladys - Jotun. In the shop they had painted a wall with the most beautiful dusty plum color called Daydream – a good name that fits my dream of a small riad. I preferred only one wall to be dark, so I found a dusty pink called SENSES that looked great with the other color. I spent full days painting. First the ceiling twice, and then twice with each color on the walls.

My arrangement of the room

Almost a year ago we invested in a new bed. It seemed to me that the old body had begun to crack a little 🙂 And it is important to sleep well. The choice fell on a Tempur bed, and I must say that we have not regretted it for a second. It is really comfortable and adapts perfectly to the body, so you feel well-rested when you wake up. We bought some delicious giant hotel pillows and some very nice bed linen from Joop on a trip we had in Hamburg. The bedspread is one I bought in Morocco. It is made in Zabra. I must have bought some to take home to Tibladin on my next trip.

The bedside tables are from Jesper Holm and are nicely spacious with the large drawers. Above the bedside tables, we have invented our own system for the lamps. We bought a wall light system so we didn't have an ugly cord hanging down from the ceiling. We replaced the lamp that originally belonged to the system with some lamps from Lightyears Orient in copper, which go well with the dusty pink and plum color of the walls.

The pictures on the wall are some I have taken on some of my many trips to Morocco, and they are developed at Pixum as a square poster. It gives a personal touch and brings back some lovely memories to use photos that mean something to you. The laundry basket in natural colors is from Tibladin, and so are the Beni Ourain rugs. It provides good coziness with blankets in the bedroom, and these are just SO soft to step on with bare toes in the morning. The lamps on the wall and the small chairs are some things we got as a wedding present when we had a big wedding in Morocco in 2004 (but you'll have to hear about that in another post :-))

I am quite happy with my little riad, and although the project seemed overwhelming at first, it went quite easily. And as I said, it's really nice to think that I got something positive out of a corona quarantine

If you want a more surprising look on the wall, these JuJu hats will fit in perfectly. They can be bought at the shop Tibladin.dk and cost DKK 1200.

I think they are amazing and give the coolest look! But I'd rather not use them in the bedroom and let you buy them in the shop until I'm sure the corona crisis is over so I can get hold of some more.

Colors: Jotun Lady: The end wall in Daydream and the rest of the walls in Senses.
