Guerrab by Yann Chatelin

Moroccan poster from 100% recycled paper. The posters are of high quality and come in a careful and protective triangular box.
Here Yann Chatelin gives us his version of Guerrab (water carrier). The poster shows a man who is a water carrier painted in blue. In the background, the drawing is a circular, Arabic pattern in an orange colour. The water carrier, guerrabas, is a very old, typical Moroccan job. In the old days, it was very common for a lot of these men to walk around the souks, bringing refreshing water to thirsty passers-by and shopkeepers for a few dirhams. Today, we have water bottles that people buy instead, so they are less popular. "Guerrab" comes from the Arabic word guerba which means bottle. The bottle is covered in goatskin which keeps the water cold and is decorated with old coins.

They are dressed in a traditional red outfit, so that you can easily see them from a distance, and the clothes are covered with copper or tin cups and a colorful hat, called a tarazza. He has a bell that he rings to show that he is present.

Especially in the souks and in the square Jemaa el fna in Marrakech you see them walking around. They are part of Morocco's traditional culture and many Moroccans and tourists appreciate them.

About the Artist

The young street art artist Yann Chatelain lives in Berlin, but was born in the port city of Calais in France in 1980. He has spent 15 years in Morocco, where he lived from 2005-2020. He became aware of graffiti at the age of 15. He believes that technology replaces individual reflection and creativity. In his works, he reflects on the disappearance of the change of hand in favor of digital writing, which has unfortunately begun to take over. Everything handwritten is unique, it is like a print, a mirror of the author's personality. So for Yann, his art is a way for him to express himself creatively and leave his mark via his own handwritten words and sentences inspired by the calligraphic font.
