Moroccan beldi glass

Beldi glass – a tribute to traditional artwork

Moroccan glasses full of personality

Tibladin's handmade Beldi glass has long since moved into the cabin at home. The teapot holders are well placed on the dining table and coffee table, while my family and I use both glasses, bowls and jugs on a daily basis. Especially ours Beldi series in green I absolutely love it. It is the most beautiful light green color that gives associations to fresh mint leaves and beautiful jade stones. The transparent Beldi series also changes so nicely in the shades, depending on how the light hits the glass. In fact, I just spoke to a Tibladin customer and for her the glass is green-blue, almost turquoise. I think that's so nice!

Beldi means 'traditional' or 'native' in Arabic. The glasses were produced for the first time in 1946, in the city of Casablanca in Morocco, Northwest Africa. Since then, Beldi glass has been the preferred tea glass among the locals when the daily cup of mint tea is to be consumed. Today, the production of the glasses has moved near Marrakesh and is a splendid example of how the local people look after and ensure the survival of a traditional craft and at the same time create work in the local community.

Sights I can recommend

Beldi glass is produced using traditional methods, which means that all Beldi glass is mouth-blown in 100% recycled glass - recycled glass which is also collected in the local area. As the glasses are mouth-blown, there will be some bubbles and small irregularities in the glasses, but this is what gives them a refined and lively expression. Part of the glass's characteristics is also the small edge slightly above the middle of the glass, which enables you to have a good grip on the glass, even if the contents are hot, which was exactly the idea, since the glasses were originally created as tea -glass. And now that autumn is well under way, it's not entirely inconvenient that the glasses can be used for orange juice one day and hot cocoa with whipped cream the next?

Beldi glass is simply good and solid design. At the same time, they are unique works of art in themselves and a symbol of a fine, old craft tradition.
